The Importance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s)

All companies have a set of procedures that allow them run their business successfully on a day to day basis.  As a business owner, you probably put in a lot of investment into your employees.

But what do you do when that employee, who knows their job inside and out, decides to leave or retire?

Are you prepared to invest in the time and training in a new employee?

Even the most qualified new-hire needs to know how to use your ERP system in the way it was designed to fit your business process.

Here’s a look at the importance of Standard Operating Procedures.

Do You Have a Documented SOP?

I have seen too many customers come up empty handed when it comes to having a written SOP for each department. Although an SOP isn’t going to be the only means of training your employees will require, it is an important piece that will help them reference back when it comes to both their daily data entry, and processes that they don’t use as frequently.

Where Should You Start?

SOP’s can be overwhelming to begin with, so you would want to departmentalize each SOP.  You might even be able to break down each department with a smaller SOP. When you tackle this process in chunks, it becomes easily digestible in the long run and the process will be completed quicker.

Make sure you cater your SOP to both visual and non-visual learners. This means coupling screenshots with text to make it easy to understand. The key point is that SOP’s are designed to make your job easier to understand ... not harder.

How To Get Help?
